Way Back When

Carleton Hotel Bar History

Carleton Hotel Bar

Time and time it has been said, wait for no man and what you see here you may be able to identify without too much trouble.  The splendid structure is the present Carletton Hotel, formerly the Matthews House, built in 1912 on rubble and ashes.

A tragedy the night of May 14, 1911 saw the old Matthews House and an adjoining Gardner Building reduced to rubble.  The old Matthews House was haven, luxurious layover and inn to a host of famous persons and weary travelers.  Preserved from the ruins of the distastours fire were many artifacts and tintype of disdistinguished guests who stayed there on their journeys.  Best guess as to identity of the family aprearing here is that they were southern travelers.

The Carleton Hotel, as anyone who has visited, still holds to a semblance of its original grace.  The original ceilings, of pressed metal are painstakingly being maintained.  The present structure still boasts the thow sotne "Carleton"cap at te peak on the fron and the proch.

Today you can go the The Hotel for your own bit of History.
